Today's Gospel: Luke 6:12-16

“Jesus went up to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God.” Luke 6:12

I am always struck by the number of times in the Gospels Jesus withdrew from others and went away by Himself to pray, especially before important events and decisions. In today’s Gospel, He even spent the entire night in communion with God the Father before choosing the Twelve who would be his Apostles and closest followers.

It is a reminder to me of the necessity of setting aside a time each day for sincere prayer, free from distraction. A time for me to be alone with Jesus to have a heart-to-heart with Him – to pour out my concerns, needs, and hopes, and to hear His gentle voice speaking to me in the quiet. This can be difficult with the constant barrage of sights and sounds around us, distracting us and drawing us away from the silence where we speak to Him and hear Him answer us in our hearts. It is difficult, but not impossible.

I schedule time for appointments, social engagements, and other activities. Can’t I also take time just for Jesus – a retreat from the noise and confusion of the world to be truly present to the One who I know truly loves me? Knowing that my days are often busy and hectic, I can rise early in the morning or during the night like Jesus did to unite my heart in prayer with Him.

Ponder:

When can I set aside time each day for prayer and communion with Jesus?

Pray:

Jesus, You went away in solitude to spend time with the Father. Help me also to retreat to a quiet place each day so I can hear Your voice in my heart and experience Your love for me.
