Today's Gospel: Luke 1:39-45
Revealing one's heart can be tricky, particularly with those to whom we are closest. When encountering a stranger for the first time, or speaking in a safe space such as that offered in many Catholic groups, it is easier to be vulnerable. For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with how I present myself to family and those who should otherwise know me best. Anxiety, low self-esteem, and even envy are true spiritual battles.
I am often bewildered by Mary, a woman who remained perfect, whether as a mother, a wife, or as in today's Gospel passage, a cousin. The love and courage she shares with Elizabeth regarding the extraordinary news of the coming of their babies is pure and genuine but also unique. I ask for Mary to intercede in helping me to become so brave. I also ask her to help me be humble.
While in today's world we often seek to protect ourselves first, whether consciously or not, let us be cognizant of the needs of those closest to us. And finally, to always choose joy.
In Mary's magnificat, she declares, "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior." A motto for any Christian, this should be our calling at all times. Though there was much heartache she could have dwelled upon, Mary's example is the epitome of love of God and love of neighbor.
Ponder:
Do I look to protect myself first when it comes to matters of the heart? Do I miss out on sharing with those God has placed closest to me?
Pray:
God, help me to find my voice and show love to my family and those whom I may otherwise take for granted or even push away. Now, we must help each other get to Heaven.
