Reflection by Virginia Pillars

Today's Gospel: Luke 13:31-35

Jesus often stated that He came to do His Father’s will. This passage is another time when Jesus, knowing the outcome of His life on earth, stated His purpose to the Pharisees trying to warn Him of Herod’s plan to kill him.

“Yet I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.” Luke 13:33

Verse 34 illustrates the depth of Jesus’ sorrow because, despite the miracles He performed, people still questioned His divinity and motives. He quoted from Scripture as He linked the prophets’ words to His life, yet people still turned away. I almost hear Him sigh with deep sadness as He says, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem . . . ”

Jesus wants to protect people from themselves and their actions much like a brooding hen protects her chicks. If you’ve ever encountered such a hen, you know she’ll do anything to keep you away from the chicks under her wings. Baby chicks aren’t aware of the dangers surrounding them, just as we aren’t always mindful of the pitfalls of listening to the loud voices of our culture drawing us away from the Lord’s protection.

As I reflect on these Scriptures, I'm sure my thoughts and actions have caused Jesus to shake His head,  saying, “Virginia, Virginia . . . ”

This passage ends with hope. I will see Jesus one day, and I can say, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,” as I remember the people who pointed the way to Jesus.

Ponder:

Do my thoughts and actions always reflect my faith in Jesus and His salvation?

Pray:

Thank You, Jesus, for loving me despite my faults, thoughts, and actions. Thank You for Your mercy, grace, and strength as I see my sins and ask for forgiveness from You and those whom I hurt.
