Explore the power of imaginative prayer through Luke 14:1, 7-11, and learn how to cultivate humility in your spiritual journey with practical guidance.
Today's Gospel: Luke 14:1, 7-11
The Bible is filled with great stories, parables, and beautiful settings that invite the use of imaginative prayer. Contemplation, or praying with the imagination, is a way in which we can accompany Jesus through the stories of the Gospel. Imaginative prayer is a highly active form of prayer that engages the mind and heart, stirring up thoughts and emotions.
Let’s give it a shot and enter the banquet being held at a Pharisee’s home. Use your imagination to delve deeper into the story, allowing God to communicate with you in a personal and evocative way. I’ll help you along by providing some prompts or ideas to help you place yourself in the scene.
• Prayerfully read through the passage first to become familiar with the story, then choose who you are and where you are.
• At the banquet, where are you seated?
• Do you want to run to the best spot? If so, ask God where those emotions are coming from.
• Whom are you honoring at the table and placing in a seat higher than yours? Ask God to bless them and pray for them.
• How does it feel to be in that space with Jesus? Tell Him your feelings.
• Check in with your emotions. Are you at peace? Unsettled? Nervous in His presence? Talk to God about the ways you are feeling.
• Are you open to God’s calling you into action? Pray for discernment and ask God for guidance.
• Finally, take in all the scene has to offer you. Look around the room at whom you have placed at your table, and enjoy the fruits that God is putting on your heart and mind in this moment. Journal any strong thoughts or emotions to look back on later.
Ponder:
How does God want me to cultivate a spirit of humility in action?
Pray:
Loving God, thank You for the time spent in imaginative prayer and for allowing me to connect with You in this way. I ask You, Lord, to fill me with the desire to be humble and put You before all else in my life and in this world.
Pray Together:
Practice humility in action at the dinner table by putting away tablets and phones. Allow everyone to be seated before eating. Bless the meal together and compliment the chef.
