Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12a

On All Saints Day, we celebrate all those who have made it to heaven, whether officially canonized by the Church or not. They have won the prize and been crowned in glory. We hope someday to join their number.

Today’s Gospel includes the Beatitudes, one of the core tenets of Our Lord’s teachings. Jesus repeats the words “Blessed are” nine times for emphasis, pointing out groups of people who, at first glance, might not be held in esteem but who, in a reversal of fortune, will receive their reward. That recompense may not be seen in this world, but “will be great in heaven” (Matthew 5:12a).

We can strive to embody some of the qualities extolled in this passage as we embrace our Christian life. For example, we can work at being poor in spirit (regardless of our level of material wealth), meek, righteous, merciful, clean of heart, and peacemakers. Other circumstances are not under our control. We will mourn losses in our lives, and we may be persecuted for working for righteousness or for practicing our faith. Jesus assures us that even in those painful seasons of life, He is with us. We will be comforted. We will ultimately experience heaven.

As we make our way through this earthly life, it can be easy to be caught up in the day-to-day trials and tribulations and take our eyes off the prize. Like those whom we celebrate today, we were made to one day be with God in heaven. Let us always keep our eyes on that ultimate goal.

Ponder:

Dear Lord, please help me to remember that You are always with me and that my ultimate goal is to be counted among the saints in heaven.

Pray:

What is one thing you can do to be more poor in spirit, meek, righteous, merciful, clean of heart, or a peacemaker?
