Today's Gospel: Luke 15:1-10

There’s a matching pair of little details in this Gospel that tells us something not just about God but about our natural inclinations as creatures made to bear His image in this fallen world. Whether we look at the shepherd who finds his lost sheep or the woman who finds her lost coin, we see celebration. When the lost is found, the seeker isn’t done seeking. He or she seeks out others with whom to share that relief and joy. Jesus celebrates. The Pharisees and scribes criticize. Christ builds relationship with joy. His detractors build resentments, the opposite of relationship. If God made us to bear the image of a Trinitarian God, one who exists in relationship, this parable shows us that finding what we seek isn’t the end. What we do with what we find defines and shapes our closeness to or distance from that Trinity. Complaining and criticism break down that relationship. Sharing with others the joy that we receive in the finding is the way we make our joy infinite.

Celebrators or critics: the choice is ours to make.

Ponder:

What can I do today to choose relational joy over criticism and resentment?

Pray:

Jesus, open my eyes to all the ways you call me to drop my complaints and embrace You in joyful, grateful relationship.
