Today's Gospel: Luke 14:15-24
I have not always been Catholic. There was a time of extreme turmoil and pain in my life when I effectively turned my back on God and His Church. Dark and desolate times for sure.
Upon discovering the profound gift of faith, I was overcome with a desire to evangelize anyone who interacted with me. My efforts were not always successful, and I experienced defeat as well as victory.
Fortunately, God allowed me to become the Director of RCIA (preparation for those seeking entry into the Catholic Church). I discovered my passion within this framework, and realized with delight, that I could preach the Gospel message with near abandon. It was a memorable time, and I still miss those days of amazing grace.
I recounted this memory to a priest-friend recently, and he smiled indulgently. “Sarah,” he said, “don’t you know that one of the gifts we are given when we become imbued with divine grace is the desire to cry the Gospel?”
Actually, I didn’t—but it made so much sense when I thought about the effects of grace on the soul.
In today’s Gospel, there is a knee-jerk reaction to focus on the people in the streets and hedges, who are invited at the last minute into the banquet; but I found myself drawn to the servant, who serves as the messenger to the would-be guests.
He was sent by the master to invite people to the feast. His message was not always well-received, especially by those who seem to have invested their time and treasure in worldly enticements; but once his field of influence was expanded, he was able to invite everyone into the feast that guarantees everlasting life.
So, be that servant, and do not resist the urge to cry the Gospel!
Ponder:
How have you cried the Gospel through example, deeds, or words?
Pray:
Beloved Creator, thank You for Your passion, death, and resurrection. Help me to keep this knowledge at the center of my being, so that I might be ready at any time, to cry the Gospel.
