Reflection by Virginia Pillars
Today's Gospel: Luke 14:15-24
In today’s reading, Jesus talks about a banquet, and many of us can relate. In the past month, we had a great-niece and a great-nephew get married. They had to limit their guest list due to space and cost, so we made the B list. In other words, we didn’t get invited. I’m okay with that because I understand their situation. We found ourselves in a similar situation when our boys got married. We had to limit the guest list. We did, however, ask for an RSVP, which challenged us. I called many people who failed to respond. I heard many of the same reasons as in the parable. They had different priorities for that day.
It fills me with joy when I think about the banquet God has prepared for us. I have a standing invitation. I just need to respond and not ignore the servant God the Father sent. Jesus extends the invitation and wants to gather us in. He wants us to answer His RSVP. How do we do that?
For me, my yes began with Baptism when my parents answered for me. I answered yes with my first Reconciliation, followed by the Holy Eucharist, then Confirmation, and later, Matrimony. Yet, my RSVP to the banquet requires much more. I need to make a daily choice to live for Christ and the ways He taught us. It helps me stay more focused if I read the Scriptures daily, followed by prayers and meditations. God’s invitation is the most important one I’ll ever receive. My life depends on it. My eternal life. And I want to spend my life answering yes to His RSVP.
Ponder:
How do I answer my invitation to the best banquet ever?
Pray:
Lord, thank You for the invitation to Your banquet even though I don’t deserve one. I pray for the grace to always answer yes, I want to come.
