Today's Gospel: Luke 14:25-33
Jesus used parables to help explain God and His Kingdom in simple terms to the people He preached to – most of whom were illiterate or uneducated. So, when He told them in today’s Gospel that a builder would be foolish to start building a tower without knowing up front if he had enough money to finish it, or a king to go to war without first determining if he had enough manpower to win, Jesus was trying to illustrate the idea of being prepared. Neither would be successful without first planning out what resources were needed for the whole project, not just to get started.
Likewise, Jesus was warning the great crowds of new followers that just because He was able to feed and heal them, that wasn’t going to be enough to be successful disciples of His in the long run. Making it to heaven wasn’t just a quick decision but a lifelong effort ,and Jesus was trying to get them to see that. They were expected to look ahead, realize it would take a change in thought and heart to give up their sinful lifestyles, and make a sacrificial effort to devote their lives to Him.
Jesus told them those who do not carry their own cross or renounce all their possessions cannot be His disciple. (Luke 14:27, 33) Our God wants us to put Him first in our heart, before all others, and be willing to give all we have to help others. He blessed each of us with many gifts and talents, and He wants us to use them to serve Him and those around us. He’s telling us it will be difficult, but the eternal rewards of giving our lives over to Him are worth the cost.
Ponder:
What might Jesus be asking you to give up today to be a better follower of Him?
Pray:
My Dear Jesus, thank You for teaching us how to be Your disciple and what pleases You. Give us the strength and courage to be good followers in giving our all to You.
