Today's Gospel: Luke 15:1-10

"There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance." Luke 15:7

I was recently chatting with friends about social gatherings. One of them said, “Don’t you hate it when you go to someone’s party and all they talk about are the people who didn’t come? What about me? What about the fact that I did come?”

I have experienced that and I find it fascinating. In our humanness, we want everyone we invite to accept so we feel affirmed and worthy of their presence. When they don’t, we take it personally. Our egos get bruised, making it all about us, not about the person or the conflict that kept them away.

Not so with God. He doesn’t have an ego, nor is it ever about Him. It’s always about us.

Finding the lost sheep isn’t about amassing a larger flock, inflating His wealth by what He possesses. It’s about the state of our souls, something that is so paramount, He keeps track of each and every one of ours. He knows it’s what determines where we’ll spend eternity. He loves us so intimately and individually, He’s desperate for every single one of us to spend eternity with Him. Again, not for Him, but for us.

It's that motivation that has Him pursuing us unceasingly, no matter how much or how far we run in the other direction.

And when we finally realize this and turn to Him the joy He experiences has no bounds. It’s why He made us in the first place: to share in the goodness of what He created here on earth, and in Heaven.

Ponder:

Do I recognize that God pursues me not for Him but for me?

Pray:

Gentle Shephard, help me to recognize how much You yearn for each and every one of us to turn to You.
