Explore the parable of the dishonest steward in Luke 16:1-8, reflecting on prudence and stewardship in our lives and service to others.

Today's Gospel: Luke 16:1-8

The parable of the dishonest steward is a perplexing one. The dishonest steward acts in self-preservation at the prospect of losing his job, yet the master commends him for acting prudently. Why would Our Lord praise someone for acting dishonestly? He does not. Rather, the steward is commended for acting with self-awareness, foresight, and pragmatism. The steward shrewdly assesses his own shortcomings and acts swiftly in order to save his livelihood. Are we so quick and accurate in judging our own strengths and weaknesses in our professional lives? In our spiritual lives?

This parable also serves as a warning to Christians that we cannot mix the pursuit of wealth with service to God. We live in an unjust world, and it can be quite a challenge at times to act virtuously. But rather than emulate the duplicitous cunning of the dishonest steward, we are called to lead lives of honesty, charity, responsibility, and prudence. We would do well to examine our conscience regularly and discern how we can best bring about the Kingdom of God on earth. Let us use the gifts God has lavishly given us (see 1 Corinthians 12:4-13) not in self-preservation, but in the service of others.

Ponder:

How can we be good and faithful stewards of what God has given us?

Pray:

Lord, source of all wisdom, bestow on us the virtue of prudence, that we may act faithfully in accordance with Your will and seek the good of our neighbors.

Pray Together:

Prayerfully review your financial contributions to the Church. Practice being wise stewards of the gifts God has given you. Choose to practice small acts of mercy, such as preparing a meal for someone in need.
