Today's Gospel: John 2:13-22

“His disciples recalled the words of scripture, 'Zeal for your house will consume me.'” - John 2:17

I have discovered that there are many ways to experience church.

One of the greatest gifts of my life was a trip to the Holy Land and Rome. Our children had given the trip to both of us in honor of my husband’s retirement.

The Holy Land was such a moving experience. There are no words to describe how it felt to walk where Jesus walked. A high point of our trip was visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, located on the site where it is believed Jesus was crucified.

In Rome, we attended Mass at St. Peter’s and visited many other churches including the Lateran Basilica, which is considered the pope’s church. It was given the title Basilica of the Savior, but later was dedicated to John the Baptist and called St. John Lateran.

Visiting all of these churches reminded me of what a Catholic church means. Church is more than just a building. It is more than brick and glass and furniture.

My former parish held its first Masses in a school auditorium for about five years near the property where we would eventually build our church. I often noted, when walking into this public school building, that we all would instantly become quiet. There was no Blessed Sacrament present before Mass yet people would act reverently.

Church is the place where we gather together as a community to listen to the Word of God and receive the Eucharist.

It is a place of worship.

It is the Father's house.

Ponder:

What has been my experience of church?

Pray:

Lord, thank you for the Church. Help me to always be reverent in your Father's house.
