Reflection by Colleen Rooney

Today's Gospel: Luke 17:7-10

While reading the Gospels, I often feel puzzled at what the Lord is trying to tell me. Other times, I feel like I get it! Reading these verses stumped me. What is the Lord trying to tell me about my life and my family? We aren’t a farming family, so we aren’t out in the field working away. We aren’t wealthy and I don’t have servants, although at times I feel like Martha when she asked the Lord to get Mary to help.

I’ve thought for some time about these verses. For me, the Lord is pointing out that I am a creature, a worker in the vineyard, His vineyard. He is the Creator who out of “sheer goodness” created everything, including me and my family. He wants me to recognize my creaturehood, my place in the scheme of things. He is God. I am His daughter. He wants me to live out that understanding in my relationships with Him and with others. I do try to do that, but I must admit sometimes I get in the way of His design.

Family relationships have a design in God’s plan. There is a husband and wife, a dad and mom, and children, brothers and sisters. The configurations may be different from family to family, but the design is the same. Within that design is a beautiful ordering of family relationships. We are imperfect and just as the servant shouldn’t expect to be served dinner by the master because he is a servant, we should strive to respect and embrace our place in God’s design for the family.

Ponder:

Do I respect and embrace each person’s place in God’s design for the family?

Pray:

Lord, help me to understand that I am a daughter, and You are my Father. Guide me to give each person their due and to teach our children to respect and honor each member of the family.
