Today's Gospel: Luke 21:5-19

Reading about plagues seemed like delving into ancient history—until COVID-19 struck. All of a sudden, we faced a worldwide pandemic that threatened lives across the globe. We were transported into a world of masks and social distancing and online Masses. For many of us, it was a time of great struggle and sacrifice.

And yet we know that God is with us, even in the midst of that heavy cross. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus warns us of earthquakes, famines, plagues, wars, and insurrections. But He goes on to say that we should not be terrified. Rather, we need to trust in Him and His goodness.

The Gospel also warns of a coming persecution. Here again, Jesus is offering us His strength to help us carry the cross. Jesus promises us His wisdom in speaking when we are confronted by accusers. We can turn to Him in confidence, knowing that He loves us and wants what is best for us.

This scripture passage comes on the anniversary of my father’s death. I am reminded of his suffering in his final days on earth. Yet I rejoice knowing that he received the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and that he received Holy Communion after 42 years of foregoing the Eucharist.

In the midst of trials and tribulations, true miracles can happen. Granted, facing the forces of darkness can be a frightening experience. But through trust in God we can overcome the darkness and step out into the light—a light that the darkness can never overcome.

COVID-19 brought many of us to our knees. At times, the fear could seem overwhelming. And yet, God with His steady arm has guided us through this trial. He will never abandon us but will always be near.

Ponder:

What frightening experiences in your life can you turn over to God today?

Pray:

Dearest Jesus, I thank You for helping me to weather life’s storms. Please give me the strength to persevere to the end.
