Today's Gospel: Luke 19:11-28

I always wonder who I would be in this story. I am not a “sales-y” person, so the idea of trading with a single gold coin gives me all kinds of anxiety. But I am also a rule follower, so if the king told me to trade, I probably would’ve done it.

With all this in mind, I think I would’ve been middle of the road. However, when I think of this as a parable where Jesus is trying to teach us something about our lives, I want to be the guy who gets ten rather than five.

Jesus makes it clear that what we do with what He has given us, He will multiply. However, if we do nothing with what He has given us, even that gift will no longer be available to us.

This practice rings true in life as well. When you are performing well at work, you typically find yourself advancing in your career. Whereas when you become complacent and do nothing, you might end up losing your job.

At home, when we see our kids being helpful around the house and following rules, they are given more personal freedom in their daily activities.

God is no different. If He knows we will be resourceful, He will give us more resources. If He knows His gifts to us will be ignored or buried in some corner of our life, He will direct resources meant for us to others who will use them wisely.

It is our choice. We can either choose to disengage, be lazy, and watch things that were meant to be ours slip between our fingers, or we can engage and watch gifts multiply in our life. I know what my choice is!

Ponder:

How can I best multiply or grow the gifts God has given me?

Pray:

Lord, You are the giver of good gifts. Help me to always maximize whatever You entrust to me to serve Your Kingdom and bring You greater glory.
