Today's Gospel: Luke 21:1-4
In parish communities, there is often a group of energetic volunteers who seem to do it all. They’re lectors, cantors, Eucharistic ministers, catechists and sodality members. They serve on all the committees, bring food for every event, and seem to be everywhere around the parish. Busy moms raising children sometimes look at these amazing parishioners and feel that anything we contribute will pale in comparison to everything they can accomplish. This is when it is most helpful to remember the widow in today’s Gospel. She is a wonderful reminder that it’s not how much you have to give, but what you do with what you have that matters.
One thing to remember is that raising children in the faith, bringing them to Mass, and teaching them to pray is in itself a service to the Church. These are the faithful who will be our future clergy and religious men and women, and who will pray for our souls after we die. It may look like ordinary daily living, but we are building the Church’s future!
It is also important to note that just because we can’t do everything doesn’t mean we can’t choose a few things to do throughout the year. You might not be able to organize the food drive, but you can make a donation. Maybe you can’t commit to being a regular catechist, but you could substitute sometimes. Maybe you can’t sign up for a regular Adoration hour, but you can pray for your parish priests and deacons or your diocese’s seminarians at home while you’re doing chores. Just as the widow gave the only two coins she had, our small gifts are as welcomed and appreciated by our Lord as others’ large contributions.
Ponder:
What is one small way I can contribute to my church community in this busy season of motherhood?
Pray:
Lord, like the poor widow, help me to find small ways to give my time and attention to Your church.
