Today's Gospel: Luke 21:5-11

Every so often, either on the news, or in a viral social media post, we hear someone warning us that the end of the world is near. Like the disciples in today’s Gospel, we can begin to feel anxious, wondering if this or that natural disaster, political problem, or attack on the family is a sign of the end times. It’s easy to get caught up in the hype surrounding such stories, and to even begin to believe that some of these warnings could be true.

When these situations arise, it is wonderful to have two encouraging lines of Scripture to cling to. One is Jesus’ reminder that many will come in His name to deceive us, but that we should not follow them. Most of the dire statements made in Jesus’ name these days are deceptions, and we don’t need to listen to them or follow those who make them.

The other comfort Jesus provides are these words: “Do not be terrified.” This admonishment helps us to remember that God is in control of everything that happens. Even when there are earthquakes, wars, and plagues, we can rest in the knowledge that our Lord will see us through.

Ponder:

How am I allowing deceptive messages to bring anxiety into my life?

Pray:

Lord, deliver me from feelings of fear and anxiety over what is to come and help me to find peace in You.
