Today's Gospel: Matthew 4:18-22

The call of the first apostles is a powerful and relevant story. Jesus calls Simon “who is called Peter;” his brother, Andrew; John and James, the sons of Zebedee. These four men are fishermen. He is not asking them to get Him fish. He not only tells them to follow Him but that He will change their vocation: He will make them “fishers of men.” He asks them to give up what they are doing and do something completely different, something they are not trained for nor desired to do before they met Jesus.

Once we give over our life to Jesus, once we follow His call, we may be asked to do something completely different. Jesus’ call should change our hearts, our lives, our very beings. Jesus asked Peter, Andrew, John, and James to give up their old life and follow Him. He asks the same from us. Can we give up the things we love of this world and follow His way? We all must contemplate and answer that question on our own.

Ponder:

Am I ready to give up my "old" life and follow Jesus?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, help me to hear Your call. Show me what I need to give up and give me the strength to follow You.
