Today's Gospel: Matthew 7:21, 24-27

There comes a point while reading Jesus’ words that I have to just pause and not take him literally.

Building a house on a ROCK? REALLY?

I get what he’s trying to say, but part of me balks. There’s a lot of effort in building on a rock. Rocks don’t give easily; they aren’t particularly easy to work with.

Oh. Wait.

Maybe that’s the POINT.

A foundation needs to be firm, unyielding.

So many parts of our lives need foundations, and our faith life is no different. Jesus offers to BE that foundation, but He’s a gentleman. He’s only asking. We have to say yes.

When the rains and floods come—and they will come—will the house of our faith be still standing?

One of my closest friends has faced losses that I can’t imagine—two infants and her husband. And yet, even so, she has remained steadfast, an anchor of trust and hope and faith.

As we sat on a front porch in the fall chill of an October evening,I once asked her how she could still turn to God.

“Where else would I go?” she said. “I couldn’t have done any of this without God.”

I remember that quite often, especially in my mom-fail moments. Jesus is there, the foundation of my life.

Ponder:

Are you facing storms in life? How can you lean into the foundation Jesus is offering you?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, thank You for being my foundation. Guide me closer to You and hold me close as I weather the storms of life.
