Today's Gospel: Luke 21:29-33

Jesus begins today’s parable likening the fig tree blooming with the end of this world. He tells His followers:

“When their buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near; in the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the Kingdom of God is near.”

Luke 21:30-31

Those of us living in wintry areas cannot wait to see those first signs of spring. We welcome the chirp of the first bird and the lengthening sunshine. I personally love searching for my first hyacinth to push upwards, out of the snow.

So too should we be searching for signs from God that His Kingdom is near. As Catholics, we know God will come again, and Jesus Christ Himself will judge the living and the dead. We should not be caught off guard because He sends us signs.

But we need to pay attention.

This means being vigilant in our prayers, in our lives. Just as we stow away winter gear come spring, we must stow away all that keeps us from seeing God’s plan. Too many of us can be like the people of old. We are blinded by anxieties, worries and stress, ignoring all the signs of the Messiah, just as they did when He was in their midst.

We miss the signs that say ‘God is in charge. Take a deep breath! He is coming back for us and His Kingdom will reign on Earth.'

Prepare yourself now, be on guard always. Be ready for Our Lord.

Ponder:

How are you preparing yourself and your family for God's Kingdom?

Pray:

Lord, help me keep my eyes not on this world, but on the world You have promised to all who believe in You. May I be found worthy when You come again.
