Today's Gospel: Luke 21:25-28, 34-36
We live in a scary world. Heartbreaking news is at our fingertips every day, hour, minute, sometimes down to the second. We now see so much in real time that we can be drowned with anxiousness. As moms, it can be exhausting to see all of this, want to fiercely protect our children, and bravely face the world.
Today’s Gospel on this first Sunday in Advent is a reminder to be ever watchful for Jesus’s arrival. It is not a call to be worried or to let our fears control us. Today’s Gospel is reminding us to pray, not live in this world, and keep our hearts prepared for His return. We also need to teach our children this as well. It can be so easy for our children to be caught up in today’s world, so much easier than when we were all children. As moms, we want to know how we can not only keep our own anxieties at bay but also protect our children.
Let’s focus on teaching our children what Jesus is calling us to do, preparing our hearts for His ultimate return. Let’s teach our children that having a relationship with our Lord is more important than the likes or followers that they could receive on social media. Let’s teach our children the beauty, power, and importance of prayer. In today's read, Jesus says,
“Stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.”
Let’s teach our children that when the world gets scary, we need to look up, look to our Lord, and draw closer to Him than the world.
Ponder:
How can we prepare our hearts and the hearts of our children for living in this world and awaiting Jesus’s arrival?
Pray:
Jesus, help us to draw near to You when we feel the anxiousness that the world can cause. Help us to have our hearts prepared, help us to prepare our children, and to lean upon Your promises of redemption.
