Today's Gospel: Luke 1:26-38

As a former Protestant, the Gospel message about the angel Gabriel coming to Mary in the Annunciation was the only thing I knew about Mary for a very long time. Growing up in my former church home, Mary was only typically spoken about during December and then just like our nativity statues, she was quietly tucked away until the next Christmas season.

Coming into Catholicism and learning about Mary was overwhelming at times. Especially learning about all of the various Marian apparitions. I had so many questions:  Are they all the same Mary? People seem to be drawn to the different apparitions. What happens if I am drawn to none? And so on and so forth. However, one Marian apparition beckoned to  me over and over again: Our Lady of Guadalupe.

I have wondered if the fact that my grandfather and his parents were born in Mexico is what has drawn me into learning more about Our Lady of Guadalupe. I have loved learning about St. Juan Diego, the roses, and the miracle of the tilma. The part that I think is the most beautiful is that Our Lady of Guadalupe is shown with Jesus in her womb.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a reminder that nothing will be impossible with God, just as the angel Gabriel spoke about Mary’s cousin Elizabeth being pregnant with St. John the Baptist. “For nothing will be impossible with God” is also our reminder that when God asks us, we can and should answer yes.

I thank God every day for pointing me home to the Catholic Church. I love learning about Mary in a deeper way than before. Mary’s goal for humanity is for us to love her Son and realize how much He loves us too.

Ponder:

How does Mary's yes help me to also say yes to the Lord when He asks me to do something?

Pray:

Jesus, thank You for Your mother. Mary is a beautiful example of how to love You, and she will continue to show us all how much You love us.
