Today's Gospel: Matthew 7:21, 24-27

In Michigan, there is a national park called Sleeping Bear Dunes. You drive to the top, and if you are brave enough, you can hop to the bottom of this large mountain of a dune in several big leaps. However, the return climb to the top is grueling. This mountain of sand turns your two-minute descent into an hour-long exercise in delicate and strategic foot placements.

The sand simply shifts with every step. You are practically walking in place no matter how carefully you try to move upward. It is incredibly frustrating. You have no choice but to fight gravity and the shifting sand.

If sand can barely handle the weight of footsteps, how much worse would it handle the weight of a house?

Jesus tells us tha if we listen and do not act on what He preaches, we will find our house on sand, a foundation that is unreliable and unstable, guaranteeing a collapse at the slightest internal or external shift.

It can be easy to read this Gospel and think oh, yes, I have the firm foundation. I attend Mass every Sunday. But when we leave Mass, how are we living?

Our foundation for a Christian life becomes firm when we live as Jesus taught us to live. This allows us to know what Jesus taught not only in our minds, but also in our hearts, in our lived experience each day.

“I live like Jesus” is much stronger than “I know how to live like Jesus.” This habit creates not simply an idea of living what is good and true, but a life lived good and true. It turns from concept to concrete–the foundation of rock Jesus refers to.

We should always desire this kind of strength in our lives.

Ponder:

Where in my life am I only listening to the Lord rather than living what He teaches, and how is He calling me to change that?

Pray:

Lord, help me to not only hear Your words, but to incorporate them into my daily life. Help me to live as You teach us to live so that you are my life's foundation, my rock in whom I trust.
