Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:35-10:1, 5a, 6-8
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.”
What is this but a call to all of us from Our Lord? In my job as a catechetical leader, I see so many people, including many families, seeking Jesus. They just don’t see the same intimacy, the same worship, or the same obedience to our Lord’s word anywhere else but the Catholic Church. People are yearning. The harvest is indeed abundant.
In the second half of the reading, Our Lord says,
“As you go, make this proclamation: ’The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.'”
We are commanded to proclaim the Good News wherever we go. We need to model this for our family. We go and proclaim; they will do the same. But notice that He doesn’t stop there. He tells us to do something:
“Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse leper, cast out demons.”
Now, most of us aren’t going to cure the sick, raise the dead, etc., but doesn’t this hearken to His saying what we do for the least of His brothers, we do for Him? We are not to be all talk and no action. We are to show our faith by our works (paraphrasing St. James). This is not only how we show Our Lord obedience, but it shows the world how we feel about our Lord. We show how much we love Him by how we demonstrate His love to our neighbor.
Our actions will proclaim the Gospel of the Kingdom. Let’s get our family involved and do it early. Let’s bring them up as laborers for the harvest. We'll set them up for spiritual success.
Ponder:
How am I setting up my family for spiritual success?
Pray:
Dear Lord, I desire to show Your love to others. I want to bring up a whole family of laborers in Your field.
