Reflection by Emily Davis

Today's Gospel: Matthew 11:16-19

It’s always amazing to me how little humanity has changed since biblical times. John had a demon for not eating or drinking. Jesus was a glutton and drunkard because He chose to eat and drink, And, He hung out with sinners?! Oy vey! We cannot please other humans because their confused opinions change daily.

Jesus's words in the last line of this passage stands out:

“But wisdom is vindicated by her works.”

True wisdom is the wisdom we receive from God through prayer and study of His Word (Scripture).

Judging others is so dangerous. I’ve always been self-conscious about how others speak about me and perceive me. When, honestly, why should I care what anyone thinks about me when as a child of God I am working hard to live life as a mirror image of Him, as His disciple on earth?

I am reminded that none of us can anticipate what others will think of us. Some people like and connect with who we are, and others don’t. Maybe they don’t like our parenting style, laugh, political slant or faith choices. Who knows? Who cares?

I have always been a giver, doer, and a loyal friend. In school, through college, because I was athletic, cheered, and had many friends, people assumed I was full of myself. Yet I was so painfully awkward and introverted by nature and still am.

Even recently, I had someone apologize for judging me. When they get to know me, they see I am always the first one to offer help for others by doing, listening, etc. I never have seen myself as better than anyone.

Don’t be quick to judge or act on anything without going to God for direction. Let Him lead. Let your actions based on Him speak louder than your words.

Ponder:

Am I prepared to go to God in every decision and rest in God’s wisdom alone? Will I willingly walk the path He has created for me and be judged by others for it?

Pray:

Father, I pray You guide me and help me to trust Your wisdom. Show me where You need me to serve. Teach me to pause before I act or speak, so can represent You well and delight in the peace that brings my soul.
