Today's Gospel: Matthew 11:16-19

“To what shall I compare this generation?” Matthew 11:16

It seems every generation grapples with the illusion that things are more difficult now than before. But perhaps, things are not worse . . . just different. Life does not remain still; we are always kept on our toes. Time and time again, as new challenges arise, our weakness is exposed. We do not outgrow our need for a savior; we do not outgrow our need for hope. Humanity, steeped in chaos and confusion, is always looking for the answer. The Christmas lights and celebrations, though mostly stripped from their true meaning, still reveal the seeking happening within. Restless hearts seeking a respite . . . peace on earth, joy, and love.

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” Galatians 5:22

Would there be a better Christmas gift for our children than to point them to where they will find these?

“But wisdom is vindicated by her works.” Matthew 11:19

Our actions will always speak louder than words. We strive to follow the Gospel and let God’s love flow through us. If we look at this generation and the challenges they face, our gift to them is to persevere in hope. What more precious gift can one generation pass on to the next than the wisdom they have received?

“Live a little more in God as center, and nothing will be a burden; nothing will distract you, you then will be aware of the presence of God who gives life to everything, who sees everything and who directs the soul in all its ways.” St. Peter Julian Eymard

When up seems down and down seems up, when the world feels like it is spinning out of control, we must anchor ourselves in the Eucharist, in the truth of God’s love.

Ponder:

What concrete action can you take this week to point this generation to the true source of lasting peace?

Pray:

Lord, as we prepare our hearts and homes to receive You, increase in us the virtue of hope that, as we persevere in loving You, others may come to know the Truth.
