Today's Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32
When I ask my adult children what they are doing this upcoming weekend, I sometimes can’t help but ask when they will fit in going to Mass. Like the sons in today’s Gospel reading, I often get replies that mimic both of them – “I plan to go Saturday night” or “I don’t think I’ll be able to go.”
The next time I talk with them, which child do you think I am happier for? Of course, the one who said they might not be able to fit it in but ended up making the effort and going!
This is the message Jesus was trying to get across in this parable, that our actions show whether we are doing our best to follow the will of our Father. It’s not enough to talk the talk, Jesus expects us to walk the walk. Saying you will help at the church or read a spiritual book then not doing it does not show integrity or authentic desire.
Saying you are a faithful Catholic without going to weekly Mass or doing your best to be kind to everyone is not following the will of God for you. Likewise, those who are always volunteering their time at church but doing it grudgingly or just for attention are also not following God’s will.
This parable encourages us to say and do what God wants from us to grow in love, virtue, and proper worship of Him. Especially as we approach the celebration of our Savior’s birth, find ways to focus on the reason for the season and not just the material things.
Ponder:
What have I been putting off doing that I promised I would do for the church or a friend?
Pray:
Dear Heavenly Father, give me the discernment and courage to do the things You want me to do and to follow through with the things I’ve promised others I’ll do. Fill me with a loving, charitable heart.
