Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 1:18-24

My last year in the convent, as time drew closer to renewing my vows and I was struggling with my vocation, I begged God to just show me what He wanted me to do and I would do it. If, while kneeling in the convent chapel, He would have revealed to me that I would marry a non-Catholic man and together we would raise nine children, I might have very well stayed in the convent!

Likewise, if the angel of Joseph's dream would have told him that not only was he to take Mary as his wife and that the Child she would bear is the Son of God, but also that when it came time to deliver Him, they would find themselves in a very crowded Bethlehem with no room in any inn; that Jesus would be born in a stable and Joseph would lay Him in a manger; that King Herod would try to kill the babe, so that he would have to take the Child and His mother and flee under the cover of darkness; that they would live as immigrants in, of all places, Egypt, until they would finally be able to return home, Joseph may have thought twice about taking Mary into his home! God, in His mercy, leads us one step at a time in our journey towards Heaven. He gives us the grace only for the moment we are in now.

So, when you see Joseph in a manger scene holding a lantern, remember that God's word is "a lamp for my feet, a light for my path" (Psalm 119:105). He is giving us the grace for the next step; let's take it. Then trust Him for the grace for the step after that one. When we look back, one day, we will be amazed how far we've come and all God was able to do with and for us.

Dear St. Joseph, righteous and obedient, teach us to do all for love of Jesus and Mary. Be our guide to our heavenly home.
