Today's Gospel: Luke 1:26-38

Today's Gospel is one that speaks to my heart deeply as a mother. We are all called to be motherly, whether that be with our own children or in some other capacity. We may be physical caregivers to a family member or via our profession, we may be teachers or librarians or volunteers in a role that ministers to others. In so many ways, we can give of ourselves in our day-to-day lives, whether that be our physical efforts or simply our time and patience.

In the Gospel of Luke this morning, we see the recounting of how Mary accepted the dramatic announcement of her new motherly role when the angel Gabriel revealed to her that she would conceive and bear God’s child. This must have been somewhat disorienting news to Mary, given her current state in life. The angel reminds her, though, that her cousin Elizabeth, at an age past which she had given up on bearing a child, was currently expecting a son.

“ . . . for nothing will be impossible for God.”

Mary may not have foreseen this path that her life was taking, but she accepted it without complaint. Whatever form our motherly efforts take, we can rely on our heavenly Mother to intercede for us and pave the way to our faithfulness with her prayers. We can do all things with God Who strengthens us.

Ponder:

In what way can I live out my call to motherhood in a deeper way today?

Pray:

Lord, I do not always live out my vocation perfectly. How can I do better today with You as my strength and Mary as my guide?
