Today's Gospel: Luke 1:57-66

As parents, we hold our children in a special, tender place in our hearts. Elizabeth is no exception, and given how long she had waited to welcome her child, she would not be dissuaded by what she knew his name was meant to me: John. She knew that he would have a special mission, and that her role as his mother was crucial to the gifts he would offer the world. Everyone around him came to know very quickly that John’s life was going to have a significant impact.

I know that in my own motherly role, I so often put a lot of pressure on myself to make exceptional decisions and to guide my children in such a way that they too will make good choices 100 percent of the time. The reality of the situation is, however, that we are all human, and sometimes we make mistakes. We endeavor to do our best, and God always blesses our efforts. Despite our human missteps, God is there loving our children and paving the path for their care. Sometimes, even, it is our children teaching us lessons as we journey through our earthly lives together. It is a tremendous privilege to be tasked with the care of another human being. At the same time, it is also quite terrifying, because of the deep love that we experience while doing it, amidst stakes that are incredibly high. This indeed is a transcendent commonality between mothers now and Elizabeth centuries ago. As Christmas draws ever near, let us always remember our common bond as mothers: our hearts on our sleeves, and God always on our lips.

Ponder:

Lord, how can I bless my children today with my prayerful guidance throughout their day?

Pray:

Lord, I love my children so very much and always ache for their comfort and care. Please guide me in shepherding them to Your will for them to the very best of my ability.
