CatholicMom-booknotes-logo All this extra work of the hap-happiest season is really putting a crimp in my reading. But when I have an "everything suddenly canceled for weather" Saturday and two kids who need supervision in the tub?

Bliss.

Yeah, I'll take the reading where I can get it, and sometimes the bathroom (with its dangerous-to-electronics environment) is JUST the place...

Yes, God!: What Ordinary Families Can Learn about Parenting from Today's Vocation Stories, by Susie Lloyd (Ave Maria Press, 2013)

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I would have liked more, the way I'd like more of a great latte or a good apple pie. This book not only made priests and religious sisters seem like regular people, it made their families seem normal, too. Lloyd did what she does so best: highlight the remarkable in ways that make it approachable. Truly, one of the best books I've read this year and certainly a book you should read. Period.

A Rich Young Man: A Novel Based on the Life of Saint Anthony of Padua, by John Edward Beahn (fiction, Tan Books, 1953, 2013)

When Tan books contacted me to see if I would be interested in reading one of the newly released novels in this series of classic Catholic novels they're re-releasing, I told them to surprise me with the one they sent. (They all looked good.)

And who should arrive in my box but my old friend St. Anthony of Padua, who I've adopted as a lifetime patron and good buddy and pal. (In other words, we talk a LOT.)

So far, this is historical fiction at its best, and I expect I'll finish it over the weekend. If, that is, I bathe my kids... :)
