God wants us to be in a close relationship with Him at all times without the distance. I have been taking a class based on the Old Testament. A few days ago I was completely enlightened. We all know the story about Moses going up the mountain for 40 days and nights and that He spoke with God. Then God gave him the Ten Commandments to share with all of us. Well, the enlightenment came from a person's comments about the fact that God wants a relationship with us first and foremost. He gives us the rules to follow because He loves us. We should follow those rules as a response to our love for Him. Growing up, the rules and God were not in the same place for me. There was my most intimate relationship with God and then there was the Church and all its rules. I was never taught that following the rules is just a response to our relationship with God. But when you really think about it, it all makes sense. When you get to that point in your life where you know you love God and want to serve Him forever, you want to follow His guidance and His laws. You want to do this not because of the "rules," but because you want to honor God and become as close as you possibly can to God. This epiphany is changing my ideas of the "rules". How about you?
