Today's Gospel: Luke 1:26-38

The Annunciation of the Lord

Angels, who seem to appear less in the New Testament than in the older Hebrew Scriptures, do not seem to make house calls today like Gabriel does in this Gospel passage. Yet, what an honor and greeting is bestowed upon such a humble female servant of the Lord by this celestial being! He announces God's great favor, which is not only the intimate gesture that is to be knitted into Mary's womb, but the radical change of relationship between humanity and the Creator. Salvation history overflows with God's abundant favor in times past and even into Mary's generation and into untold generations since.

Ponder:

The Word from which all creation comes has this day spoken to his handmaid who replied, "May it be done according to your word."

What can you do to more closely appreciate God's creative Word that gives you your life? What can you do to strengthen your kinship with all humanity who shares in the imprint of this sacred moment in human history?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, you are fruit of Mary's womb.
May we always remember to cherish our Mother,
Humbled by our human ways
And raised to the dignity of your image.
May we remember and be worthy of Gabriel’s herald:
"Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you."
