Feast of Saint Mark, Evangelist

Today's reading brings Mark's Gospel to a close. Mark offers us the earliest and shortest Gospel. It is crisp, breathtaking, and clear. Announced earlier at the start of Lent with a call to "Repent and Believe!" we are now given the Great Commission to share the Good News to the ends of the earth with the same offer to be reconciled with God's family as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Following in one's master's footsteps is to be expected. But the real surprise here is what that means for those who have chosen to conform their lives by his example. The signs that will accompany them are full of portents and power as well as suffering and sacrifice. The great mystery remains of how the power of God is ultimately embedded in repentance and forgiveness.

Ponder:

How can we continue to experience the radical power of humility? How can we continue to be forgiving so as to be a sign of real and positive change?

Pray:

Christ, your love and forgiveness are living signs.
Conform our lives to this mystery
And make us a sign of your peace.
