The Holy Cross Connection
The Ave Catholic Notetaking Bible reflects the legacy of Ave Maria Press as an apostolate of the Congregation of Holy Cross, United States Province of Priests and Brothers. As part of Holy Cross Family Ministries, Catholic Mom is also a Holy Cross apostolate, and we're excited to celebrate this connection by helping to introduce this Bible to readers around the world.
Ave Maria Press was founded in 1865 by Fr. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., shortly after he established the Congregation in the United States and founded the University of Notre Dame. Fr. Sorin started The Ave Maria magazine to honor Mary, focus on Catholic families, and showcase the best American Catholic writing. We continue that tradition today as one of the oldest, continually operating Catholic publishing houses in the country and a leader in publishing Catholic high school religion textbooks, ministry resources, and books on prayer and spirituality.
In the tradition of Holy Cross, Ave is committed, an a educator in the faith, to help people know, love, and serve God, and to spread the gospel through our books and resources for schools, institutions, ministers, Christian individuals and families, and others seeking spiritual nourishment. The Ave Catholic Notetaking Bible offers additional depth to our ministry and an opportunity to continue to educate the minds and hearts of the faithful.
Both editions of the new Bible — imitation leather and hardcover — feature the cross and anchors emblem of the Congregation on the cover and cases. Blessed Basil Moreau, the French priest who founded the Congregation of Holy Cross, first began using a similar symbol as part of the Congregation’s coat of arms in the 19th Century. Moreau had a strong devotion to the cross carried by Jesus on the road to Calvary; the Holy Cross motto is Ave Crux, Spes Unica, “Hail the Cross, Our Only Hope.”
More about the Book Club
Mark your calendar! Sonja Corbitt, the Bible Study Evangelista, will host three Book Club sessions on Facebook Live at 11 AM Eastern on these dates:
- Wednesday, May 12
- Wednesday, May 19
- Wednesday, May 26
Sonja's essay, "How to Love the Word," is part of the bonus content in The Ave Catholic Notetaking Bible. Sonja encourages readers to approach the Bible differently than they would any other book: savoring, pondering, listening for truth.
How do you learn to experience God in the scriptures like this? Mary models how through the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Her example is an invitation to LOVE the Word with her. (1498)
As a Book Club bonus, Sarah Christmyer will join us on social media this Advent with a follow-up study. Sarah contributed the Introduction to the New Testament and an Advent Bible Reading Plan to this Bible. We'll share more details about this Book Club bonus in the fall.
We're looking forward to your participation in our May and Advent Bible Study Book Club events!
