Barb Szyszkiewicz reviews a Lenten devotional booklet focused on simplicity and surrender.
I got some news a week ago that is going to impact, in a big way, how Lent will go for me this year. It immediately became clear that I will need to simplify, to plan gently, to intentionally prepare NOT to overdo (because we all prepare to overdo when we think about Lent, don't we?).
That stack of spiritual reads I was planning to dive into for Lent? They will probably remain untouched a little longer.
I also got a booklet on that same day: My Daily Visitor from Our Sunday Visitor and Aleteia. The first thing you see when you open the book is Bl. Charles de Foucauld's Prayer of Surrender. And after that, each day beginning the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, Fr. Patrick Mary Briscoe, OP, offers a brief reflection, prayer, and call to action based on the day's Gospel reading.
Lent, simplified. That's what I need this year. If I can handle more, I've got that stack of meaty spiritual reads near at hand. But on those days when I need to surrender to the demands of the situation at hand (and I know there will be plenty of those days) ... this booklet is the right Lenten practice for me.
