Kimberly Novak recalls a meaningful Sunday homily instructing us to bless our loved ones daily.
Gathering kids, backpacks, lunches, and the items needed to survive the day as we head out the door daily can be daunting. I know I’m not alone when I reflect on the days of having to get back in the car and run something up to the school that didn’t make it into the backpack. The hustle and bustle are overwhelming and often chaotic, leaving no room for the formalities of a proper send-off. Recently, I had a light-bulb moment while listening to a Sunday homily — which I think can bring many meaningful experiences.
It has been said that turning a choice into a habit takes 21 days. I have heard this more often in the world of diet and exercise. However, I’m sure it can be applied to anything, even out-of-the-door routines. I think most busy moms have a set of routines for almost anything, and sometimes, the stress of it all may leave out moments of affection, not to mention forgetting to bring God along for the ride.
Create a meaningful family tradition that overcomes the busyness
My children are all grown, but I still remember the days of emotional panic while preparing them for school, sports, or a family outing. I lost sight of inviting God to accompany the little ones and ensuring the kids knew God’s presence.
Until recently, I could only look back and wish I had done things differently. After hearing a very exciting idea in a pastor’s homily, I knew I had to share it with today's young moms. Not only that, but it can be applied to any family member or friend; it’s not just for moms.
Father discussed making a habit of bringing God into your day and offered a few suggestions on how to do that. The one that stuck to my heart was the one he referred to as “the Sign of the Cross.”
During the sermon, Father suggested making the Sign of the Cross over your heart before falling asleep and when you awake the next morning. After a time, this practice would become a habit and serve as a reminder that God is always with you. It engages your heart and mind in a prayerful act. I thought it seemed pretty easy until Father admitted that it took him ten years to perfect the practice!
The idea Father mentioned next is a priceless gem waiting to be shared. It applies to anyone and everyone, not just the busy mom. It is a brilliant send-off that will bring a heart-warming smile and a treasured blessing.
A quick and easy reminder of our love, God’s love, and the cross
At this point in the homily, I felt God pull me straight up in my seat and prepare me for meaningful words of wisdom! Father stated that as your loved one heads out the door, make the Sign of the Cross on each of their foreheads, saying, "God loves you, and I love you. Go and have a wonderful day.”
It is a short, easy, and to-the-point phrase that will bring many memories, smiles, hugs, and blessings into any chaotic carpool line, bus stop, or family home. I’d imagine that for the kiddos who don’t like to get too close to the loving, adoring mom, simply saying the phrase as they are running out or hopping out of the car would be just as impactful.
God has reasons for bringing things to light for us in special ways. I am pretty sure that I was supposed to hear that Sunday message to reflect on what the Cross means to me and how important it is to share the blessing with those we love.
As your little ones embark on each day, send them off with a blessing of God’s love, your love, and the reminder of the Cross. If you are consistent with the practice, you will have created a wonderful habit — even if it takes more than 21 days.
