Teri Sinnott suggests a focus on science and facts when we discuss abortion and the law with others.
As the country erupts with outcries of support and of disdain, we are looking at the potential of the end of Roe v. Wade. What I have learned from the internet is that most people did not pay attention in government class in high school and that they do not fully understand what this means.
Quick lesson: this gives the states the ability to make and govern their own laws over abortion. So, abortion is not outlawed. In states like Alabama and Texas, abortion will be very difficult with a lot of restrictions. But in states like New York and California, nothing will change.
The battle to end abortions doesn’t stop with the end of Roe v. Wade; it is simply the start of a longer battle to ensue.
It is time for us prolife Americans to arm ourselves with facts. As Catholics we know that life is sacred, and we approach this battle with our faith and our morals. But the rest of the world doesn't care about our faith.
Many think that we should take our faith out of the debate. How do we do that? We focus on the science and facts when we discuss this issue with others. We know science supports our faith.
Lie #1: If abortion is outlawed, women will die of ectopic pregnancies
Ectopic pregnancies are not considered an abortion. The baby is not viable, and the mother will die. Women are not denied treatment for ectopic pregnancies in any state or under any law. Period.
Lie #2: Women will be charged for having a miscarriage
The laws that do call for any “charging” are for doctors violating the law. There are civil charges for those that assist in obtaining an abortion for someone. There are no laws that directly charge the mother. Women going through the traumatic event of a miscarriage do not need to worry that they will be somehow charged criminally.
Lie #3: Women having a miscarriage will be denied medical care
Yes, a miscarriage is called a “spontaneous abortion” in the medical community. BUT it is not classified as an abortion under any law currently or any being proposed. If the baby has died, she has the right to medical treatment. It is not an abortion if the baby is already dead. This is another lie intended to scare women.
Lie #4: Abortion is needed to save a mother’s life
Abortion is never needed to save a mother’s life. Multiple doctors have stood up since New York’s law went into place that stated there are zero issues a mother has during the 3rd trimester that require abortion. Delivery is actually much safer for the mother, and it allows the child a chance at life. A C-section can be performed in under 10 minutes in emergency situations. It takes 2 to 3 days to have a late term abortion. You are in more danger having an abortion than delivering.
And abortion always ends the life of the child. There are times when the baby may not be able to survive due to being delivered early. In these scenarios the child is given a chance or at least time with the parent before passing. In abortion, the child is dismembered and violently killed.
Lie #5: Abortion needs to be legal for cases of rape and incest
The research that we have does not show that women are negatively affected by giving birth. The most recent studies say there was not a difference between women who were denied abortion and those that had an abortion. Many other studies that have been done have found that abortion is actually more traumatizing for the victim than giving birth. The actual abortion re-traumatizes the individual.
Lie # 6: It is a clump of cells
We have SCIENCE. Actual science that states that life begins at conception. At conception, the baby has unique DNA making it a separate life. It also grows, which demonstrates life. It has a heartbeat as early as 18 days past conception. We have pictures, images, etc. of babies in various stages in the womb.
We know more now. Babies feel pain, but the exact gestational age is still unclear. Doctors know somewhere between 14 and 30 weeks. It could also be different for each baby as their nervous system develops.
It is not a clump of cells. That is a very old, uneducated argument that simply does not hold up to SCIENCE.

Too often, women are lied to. You read their personal stories, but the laws in place don’t actually support those stories. I will not say they are lying. They are likely sharing their own experience. Doctors often push for abortion because it is easier for them. It is easier to get an abortion paid for than it is to get the insurance companies to agree to doing delivery early. It is hard to get the insurance company to agree to costly neonatal care bills.
It isn't the law that is restrictive for women and preventing them from carrying their child or delivering early—it is insurance. The real enemy isn’t pro-life laws—it's insurance companies that control doctors and hospitals.
We need to arm ourselves with facts that can help us to educate those around us. If you are looking for more information on these issues, some great organizations you can explore are: Live Action, American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and always the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
