Reflection by Colleen M. Rooney

Today's Gospel: John 16: 23b-28

In July, I will turn seventy. As a child this represented old age. My grasp of time as a child was different than it is now. There are many references to time in these Gospel verses. Jesus speaks of a day, a time, when His apostles will not question Him. He also refers to a time that they can ask anything of the Father in His name, and they will be given it. Yet until now, until this time, they have not asked.

Our Lord directs them to ask in His name and they will receive and be filled with joy. These words are difficult to comprehend; somewhat like trying to grasp what seventy means when one is a child. The Lord then goes on to tell the apostles, and us, that an hour is coming – another measure of time – when He will speak plainly of the Father, not in parables.

This is followed by a day when we will ask in Jesus’ name, but He will not ask for us. Why? The answer: He does not need to ask for us, for the Father loves us and knows that we love Jesus and believe that He came from the Father.

Things begin to make a bit more sense. Jesus is explaining to us that our firmer belief and deeper understanding of Who He is, the Beloved Son of the Father, Who came from heaven and returns to heaven, is the key to establishing a more familial relationship with the Father, one that may ask anything.

Ponder:

Can I go deeper in understanding my relationship with God the Father? Can I turn to the Beloved Son and ask for help, ask for more time to grow in trust and lay deeper roots?

Pray:

Lord, I am no different than the young child. I often do not understand Your meanings. My ways are limited. My comprehension feeble. Please give me Your Hand and raise me up. Lord, I love you!
