Today's Gospel: Luke 17:11-19
The lepers were not ashamed to shout out to Jesus, begging His help and healing. He was their last resort, the only hope they had left.
Is Jesus sometimes our last resort after we’ve tried fixing things ourselves? Or is He our go-to guy for moment-to-moment healing for things big and small?
I “moved into” a new laptop and a new phone this year. Let’s just say things didn’t always go my way or according to my timeline. In my frustration and impatience to have everything resolved, my “leprosy” – the missing trust and unsound spots in my soul - showed themselves. My weak spots aren’t visible, but were painfully apparent because I had forgotten to “shout out” to Jesus.
The lepers were humble enough to know they needed Jesus’ help. I wasn’t. I caught myself choosing anger over trust and self-will over surrender to Divine Providence.
The lepers remind me that Jesus rarely heals anyone who doesn’t ask for it. That is, if we choose misery over joy by neglecting to turn to Him, He leaves it to our free will—and we suffer the consequences.
How can we best ask Jesus to cleanse the unsound spots in our soul? First, admit that we have wounds that only Jesus can heal. Second, ask Him for help—and remember, like the one grateful leper, to thank Him as we await his aid.
Ponder:
What is bothering me today that only Jesus can help me with?
Pray:
Lord, let me turn to You in my frustrating moments, realizing that trust in Your mercy is my sure refuge.
