Today's Gospel: Luke 2:16-21

One of the greatest moments of my life was when I got the chance to hold my daughter in my arms for the first time. I had awaited the moment with such anxious anticipation. While I had seen the sonogram of her while she was tucked safely in my womb, to gaze at her face shortly after her birth was definitely a love-at-first-sight moment.

Imagine Mary’s thoughts as she looked lovingly at her Son in the manger, the dependable Joseph by her side. Perhaps she felt a mix of emotions—elation at His birth, coupled with uncertainty about the path which lay ahead.

While a doctor and nurse were present for my daughter’s birth, her greeting party was small, intimate, and expected. In sharp contrast, Mary must have been utterly amazed to be greeted by shepherds who had been guided by angels to behold the face of her baby boy.

She had just given birth, and now she was entertaining guests! As mothers, our on-the-job training conditions us to brace for the unexpected—a lesson Mary learned on Day 1 of her Son’s life outside the womb.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that the name of God is present in Jesus, the Son of God Who became man in order to free us from our sins. (CCC 432) The Incarnation gives us great hope for our future, knowing that Jesus opened up the gates of heaven for us through His life, death, and resurrection.

Our maternity leads to a special bond with God as Creator and Sustainer of life. We cooperate with Him in safeguarding life—whether as biological mothers, adoptive mothers, or spiritual mothers. We are life-bearers and promise keepers and therefore have a special place in the Father’s Heart.

May we, like Mary, gently ponder these mysteries.

Ponder:

What one act of love can I perform today in thanksgiving for the blessings God has bestowed upon me?

Pray:

Father, You fashioned me in my mother’s womb. Help me to show ever greater reverence for the profound gift of life.
