Today's Gospel: Mark 5:21-43

I remember the moment when I realized—without any doubt or question—that my daughter could die.

It was terrifying, and it was also grounding. Oh, I had always mouthed the words, “Lord, she’s yours,” but they didn’t really make sense until that night when I followed the ambulance, completely unsure what the outcome would be.

Over a decade later, my husband still cites it as the most terrifying moment in his life.

Perhaps Jairus, the synagogue official, wasn’t a big fan of Jesus’. Maybe he was just reaching out because he had nothing to lose. Could it be that his wife—mother of that daughter, lying there so ill—insisted on it? (I can’t help but think so.)

Whatever the back story, Jesus went, and He arrived—after a sideline miracle that is its own lesson in trust—after the girl had, by all appearances, died.

Jesus must have seen the heartbreak, must have felt the swell of emotion. Maybe His voice broke a bit when he told them that she was asleep.

But that strident ridicule was a foreshadowing, wasn’t it? It’s so hard to have hope in the face of despair. It’s so hard to keep going when all signs point to failure.

Talitha koum,” He said to the girl, and He says to each of us. “Little girl, I say to you, arise!”

Don’t let the disappointment, the hurt, the weight of the world keep your eyes from the Son. Look up. Have hope. Trust deeply in the love He has for you.

Ponder:

How is Jesus inviting you to arise today? How can you take a step toward Him?

Pray:

Jesus, You invite me to arise and have hope. Guide me, today and always, in walking toward You and with You.
