Today's Gospel: John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30

It can’t be true.

How often does humanity dismiss a miracle in search of a more “rational explanation?” It is human nature to start from a framework of doubt, and the people in this encounter with Jesus are no different.

There is a glimmer of hope in the beginning of this conversation:

“Could the authorities have realized that he is the Christ?”

And then an immediate rationalization and dismissal:

“But we know where he is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from."

Even after Jesus provides guidance towards an alternate answer, the group dismisses the idea, seeking to arrest Him.

It is far easier to maintain the status quo of your life when something is not true. This only becomes harder with age: Maybe you have a stable marriage, you need to protect and provide for your children, or perhaps you have to maintain your income at your current job.

If any life-changing truth got in the way of this stability, it could ruin you. It is much scarier to acknowledge a miracle or a truth in your midst knowing the accompanying change that is attached to that affirmation.

The choice is yours. Will you acknowledge Christ when He is in your midst today or dismiss the encounter in the name of stability? Jesus Himself shows us that safety is not a Gospel value, but unflinching courage in the pursuit of Truth most certainly is.

Ponder:

Do I need to repent from a time that I have I seen the truth of Christ and dismissed Him in the name of safety and comfort?

Pray:

Christ, grant us the strength to see with eyes of courage, seeking Your Truth no matter the consequences. Forgive us the times when fear prevented us from seeing You in Your complete Truth.
