Today's Gospel: John 7:40-53

Division comes in so many shapes and forms. I’m not a math wizard, so I prefer not to elaborate on mathematical division. I’d rather take a moment to envision how Jesus felt when all those around Him were divided in their belief in Him. Many, in a sense, judged a book by its cover given their insistence that the Messiah could not have come out of Galilee.

No one will argue over a beauty queen with a flawless complexion or an athlete who excels in their sport until one among them does not quite fit the bill. How did he make the team? Why has she entered this contest? These questions  come up in such instances. It is unfortunate, but I think this way of thinking has become natural in our society, and in reflecting on John’s Gospel, not too far off from what it was like in Jesus’ day.

God's grace of free will is a powerful tool that allows us to think for ourselves, even when the crowd among us has a different opinion. This act is often practiced by jurors in a court case, family division, and tensions in the workplace. I believe that how we react in division matters and is a direct result of our faith-lived life and relationship with God.

Ponder:

In times when division and conflict arise, of which you are a part, can you or have you responded in faith? Have you considered how God wants you to act and think on a sensitive topic? Are you able to respond in a way pleasing to God?

Pray:

Dear God, You are what is perfect in our world; everything around us is flawed. I ask for Your help when I am faced with situations of conflict and division. Help me to react in faith and in a way pleasing to You. In these times, Lord, remind me the battle belongs to You.
