Today's Gospel: Luke 16:19-31

Our faith teaches us that Jesus died for our sins to save our souls. This does not mean, however, that we should go about our days living in ways that are not pleasing to God. I believe the parable in today’s Gospel shares a simple message: We are to live in a way pleasing to God and not choose this world above eternity.

In the early part of my adult life, I was labeled a people-pleaser. It wasn’t until I began an actual relationship with Jesus that I decided to please Him above all others. Sometimes, my Christian life pushes way those who do not share the same love for God as I do. I pray for those individuals that they can love God just as much as I do and embrace the joy that will follow.

In praying with today’s Gospel, I imagine a scene where Lazarus prays for the rich man whenever he turns Lazarus away. God hears that prayer and gives the rich man wisdom, changing his heart and his entire way of life. Changing one heart leads to changing others' hearts. The rich man does not have to worry about his family and friends, for those who see the remarkable changes and love for God coming from the rich man allow themselves to embrace God’s light and love.

My scene is very different from the parable in the Gospel, but it encourages me to be the one helping to change hearts.

Ponder:

How might I share God’s love with those around me, even when met with opposition?

Pray:

Loving God, help me to be a good steward of the good news that Jesus has died for my sins. May my life represent all that is good and deserving of Your grace.
