Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:17-19
Today’s reading from Matthew focuses on teachings about the law. Jesus says in this Gospel passage,
“Do not think I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” Matthew 5:17
In reflecting on our own relationship with Jesus, it is comforting to know that when He came to earth, He had a mission to fulfill what God willed for His life. This mission, of course, is our redemption and that of the world. Jesus died for us so that we might live eternally with Him in heaven.
As moms who live out a daily mission of love to our families and all those we encounter, we are on a mission as well. In this same Gospel passage, Jesus also says,
“Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 4:19
Being given the awesome gift of motherhood by God comes with tremendous blessings but also great responsibility. To follow Jesus’ command in today’s readings, we must not only love but also watch over our children for the good of their souls. We do this in protection to guard them against the evils of the world. This is a momentous task given to us by God himself.
Jesus' greatest commandment is always that of love. Today, as we watch over our families as a loving parent, let us keep in mind the great responsibilities given to us in order to direct those we love toward God in all ways.
Ponder:
Lord, how can I be a better steward of the souls You have entrusted to my care?
Pray:
Jesus, help me to always remember the great responsibilities You have given me as a mother. I pray that today and every day I can do Your will in all ways.
