Today's Gospel: John 10:31-42
In today’s Gospel, Jesus defends His right to call Himself the Son of God. He quotes Psalm 82:6: "Gods though you be, offspring of the Most High all of you." Since Scripture speaks of humanity as such, Jesus can speak of Himself this way.
I noticed similarities between the Jews’ perceptions of Jesus and those of the society in which we live. Jesus’ ministry demonstrated the goodness, love, and mercy of God. Our lives are meant to do the same. Have you experienced hostility as described in today’s Gospel? Have you encountered obstinate hearts as you testify to Christ?
I have. Not everyone in my life shares the same faith or zeal. When conversations surrounding our Catholic beliefs and practices arise, an almost-palpable tension creeps in. I strain against this tension, and I measure my words with care. While it’s important to foster loving relationships, not being able to fully share myself with those closest to me is painful. This hurts especially when someone close to me is experiencing their own trial. How I long to share the love of Christ and the wisdom of the Church with those who are hurting or are searching for more!
Despite His doing nothing but good, there were still those who sought to silence Jesus and turn from His light. Though we may not be faced with persecution by stoning, we may encounter resistance when we testify to our faith. Discipleship can be a challenge even among family or friends. Relying on the guidance of the Spirit with an open heart is a good place to start. We don’t have all the answers this side of the veil, but if bringing Christ’s love and mercy to others is the intent, He will guide our efforts to bring souls closer to Himself.
Ponder:
How you can remain steadfast in your words and actions when those closest to you don't share your faith or zeal?
Pray:
Lord, may we never become complacent in our relationship with You. Guided by the Spirit, may we always share You, unashamedly, with those around us.
