Today's Gospel: John 13:21-23, 36-18
“Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times.”
These words cut to the point of the relationship between God and humanity. God is faithful. God is loyal. And in these things are divine love. Humans lack the full understanding of faithfulness and loyalty. This is precisely the gap that leaves humanity fallen and in need of the very Passion about to take place of our Savior, Jesus Christ. If Jesus was not betrayed by one of His own, it would not drive home the point that God is always betrayed by His own image when we sin. Our everyday moments of turning away from God are no less shocking than those actions of Judas.
And yet, this event is good news. Why? Jesus foreshadows the redemption of humanity when He states,
“Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later.”
As humans, we must face our shortcomings, seek a compassionate God who understands them, and open ourselves to His mercy. Peter is not yet ready to face his fears. Nevertheless, he will become a rock who leads a Church and has the courage to face martyrdom for His Lord. Jesus remains with him through that transformation, patient, honest, and challenging him to more. Our faith lives work a similar way, wavering between the desire for loyalty and the temptation to sin. And in the breach, Jesus still dines with us, still gathers us, and still teaches us until we get it right.
Ponder:
What is one step I can take towards loyalty to Christ today?
Pray:
Merciful Lord, You model loyalty and are patient in our transgressions. Forgive us for what we do not yet understand and place in us a faithful, loyal heart that seeks Your will above all things.
