Today's Gospel: John 14:27-31a

As Catholic mothers, it is easy at times to feel a sense of discord in terms of the obligations of motherhood in living our daily lives. Today’s reading from John speaks of the peace given to us by Jesus, which is a gift from Him to us.

Jesus speaks about the fact that He had to go “back to his Father,” which was what was intended. He says that the ruler of this world, namely the powers of evil, do not have any power over Him. In his last statement, He speaks of His love for His Father, and that He does exactly as His Father has commanded of Him.

This is great advice for us as mothers and as followers of Christ. When we feel that sense of uneasiness or stress, we can imitate Jesus and do the same thing that He did. We can trust God, our Father, and decide to move ahead and follow His will for us.

This may seem complicated, but it is a gift that we can find peace by following the example of Jesus. Jesus’ ultimate gift and offering to his Father was in doing God’s will. It is not always an easy thing to follow and obey whatever God is asking us to do, but in doing so it leads to happiness and ultimate fulfillment.

Immediately after the verses in today’s Gospel, Jesus commands, "Get up, let us go." This command is also for us in terms of not sitting idle waiting for something to happen before we accomplish the will of the Father. We can imitate Christ by being obedient to God and in doing whatever it is we are called to do that day for our families and for others as an act of love.

Remember in your prayers today that your vocation as a mother is primary and that God’s will can be found in being the best version of yourself for your family. Never give up praying and in searching for the peace that can be found in your relationship with Christ and His Church.

Ponder:

How can you find peace on this day by modeling Jesus?

Pray:

Lord, help me to find the peace that only You can give. I pray that in trusting You, I will find it.
