Today's Gospel: John 16:20-23

Almost the entirety of today’s Gospel passage screams Paschal Mystery to me. One of the Church’s central concepts, the Paschal Mystery encompasses death and dying, rising and new life. As I’ve grown in my faith over the past several years, I’ve learned that the liturgy of the Church is not the only time we experience the Paschal Mystery.

We experience the Paschal Mystery in our daily lives. This may be in obvious ways, such as the death of a loved one or the birth of a child. It can also manifest in ways more subtle or nuanced. A few years ago, I went through a time in my life where everything felt off. Nothing made sense anymore. I was confused, sad, and angry that things weren’t working out as I thought they would. Even after eliminating a significant source of stress from my life, I continued to feel lost as I considered what might be next.

Several months later, a new opportunity presented itself that I had never considered. Apprehensive, yet hopeful, I chose to dive in. What I found was a beautiful surprise that I never anticipated. The months of confusion and turbulence I had been experiencing (my Good Friday) were indeed preparing me for this new blessing (Easter Sunday).

If we are inclined to despair during a particular Good Friday season of life, let us not forget Jesus’ words today:

“But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.” John 16:22

Let us look forward in hope and recall that Love won it all for us three days later, on that glorious Easter Sunday.

Ponder:

Can you remember a Good Friday season of life that brought about a glorious Easter Sunday?

Pray:

Lord, help us to hold fast to hope in our'Good Friday seasons of life. May we trust that Your loving providence will always lead to Easter Sunday.
